Maslow's Hierarchy of needs is his theory of motivation. It is the order of what things motivate humans to action. Humans will not and cannot move on to a higher set of wants or needs when they have not achieved the one before. Physiological needs come first which are the basics of animal needs, which is food, water and warmth; then above it is safety and security. These are the most basics of function once these are obtained then people can want for other things. Such as intimate relationships and friends, that sense of belonging and security. This ad for Chinese New Years that circulated around mainland China at the time, promotes chopsticks as not a house hold utensil but a way to bring forth human connection. It appeals to the need for family, friends, neighbors, community and loved ones of all sorts.
